Begun in 1980 by Dorothy Sutton, the Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival is an opportunity for the talented music student to participate in a State Festival in a Showcase Recital.  There is no more adjudication at the state level. To assure high standards, the student must first qualify in Local Preliminary Auditions, and must demonstrate a minimal knowledge of music theory by passing a written theory exam with a grade of 85%.

At our meeting on September 16, 2010, the membership decided to hold an HONORS RECITAL for students who earn a grade of 85% on the theory examination and received a grade of “S” (superior) on both performance pieces. Those qualified students who decide to participate will receive a certificate and a gold medal at the conclusion of the recital.

There are no entrance or registration fees.

  • Entrance Fees:
    • Local fee:  $13.00 per student, Please make check payable to LVC/PMTA
    • State fee:  $13.00 solo, $20.00 per Ensemble.

  • Measures numbered must be included in each piece the student plays.
  • There will no longer be solo adjudication at the State level; students will play in showcase recitals only.  Ensemble adjudication will still take place. The Judge will decide which piece the student will perform but if not, the teacher will decide.
  • In order to proceed on to the state level students must:
    • Reside in the State of Pennsylvania (this rule does not apply to the local level.)
    • Receive Superior marks [“S-S”] on both pieces
    • Receive at least 80% on the theory test
  • There will be ONLINE enrollment (no traditional mail) for those students qualifying for the State Showcase Recitals. This means each teacher (or the teachers representative) must have the students personal information, sibling and any ensemble performance information (if applicable), title of piece, performance time, and performance grade and enter it through the website.
  • Each state application form must include the following information:
      • The recital piece circled
      • The scores and theory test grade
      • The teacher volunteer information. 
  • State Applications - Teachers must submit:
    • State forms only accepted by email to State Chair – Deadline Oct. 14.
    • Please submit separately by mail the state fee checks to state chair.
  • Teachers must accompany their students to the State Festival and volunteer to help on recitals. If a teacher cannot attend, there is a $20 substitution fee. Parents will not be substitutes.
  • A note to teacher who have not participated in the past: 
    Each student must take a theory test before or after the audition (follow signs to Theory Test Room).  Click the THEORY link above for information on the material covered in various levels of the test. The passing grade is 85%.
  • Teachers must choose the level according to the student’s ability. 
    • Note: Students playing late in the day are to take the theory exam before the audiiton.
