  • Our Guest Teachers

The Master Class program is open to any student whose teacher is a current active member of the LVC/PMTA. The LVC/PMTA designed this program to provide our students with an opportunity to work with a nationally known musician educator in a class setting so that they may gain further understanding of music literature, instrumental or vocal technique, and musicianship. Furthermore, we have incorporated this program to refresh and revitalize our teachers by providing them with new insights into the pedagogical process, with new teaching tools, and with new techniques for practice and performance offered by highly qualified musician educators.

The chairperson will gather suggestions for master teachers from various sources including current member teachers and to create a minimum of two programs per year.

The master classes incorporate piano, voice, and a variety of musical instruments into the programs. For the 2011-2012 season the programs can be found by clicking the "our guest teacher" tab above.

The Art of Cheating: Pianistic Considerations for Small-handed Students (and Teachers!)

Moving beyond early teaching literature we quickly find ourselves in the musical world of MWBH (men with big hands) – they write and edit a lot of the music we teach and play. Teachers need strategies to help small-handed students learn to break the “rules”, thereby technically “reinterpreting” the music without compromising the sound. This workshop will cover the development of important motion principles to assist all students as well as offering practical suggestions from a wide-range of musical examples. Teachers are encouraged to submit problem pieces/passages in advance for discussion during the workshop.

The afternoon master class will be a working class rather than a strict performance/interpretation session. Students and teachers are invited to bring problem passages and we will work to find greater ease in negotiating the notes and creating appropriate sounds. Pieces do not need to be memorized or “performance ready” (but they must be well-learned!) and students have the option of playing an entire selection or simply portions from it.
