Rising star, pianist Hanchien Lee has quickly established herself as an accomplished soloist (since her appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra at 16), a diverse recitalist (appearing in America, Asia and Europe), and an award-winning chamber musician (appearing at such venues as the Sarasota and Norfolk Festivals). Accepted by the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music at 11, she studied there with both Eleanor Sokoloff and Claude Frank, the master who has been featured several times on our series. Lee holds a Master’s and Artist Diploma from Yale University and a doctorate from Peabody Conservatory of Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University; she has won a number of prestigious scholarships, award and competitions.

Appearing in our series in March 2010, Alon Goldstein, the pianist and musical communicator will be here again. His recitals—given at the United States, Europe and in his native Israel—have generated enthusiastic responses from music critics and audiences alike. His appearances with such major North American orchestras as Baltimore and Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver have led to invariably positive reviews. “An irresistible powerhouse performance” is how the New York Times described one of his recent appearances. A student of the legendary Leon Fleisher, Goldstein has graduated from the Peabody Conservatory. He is known for his dynamic personality, musical intelligence, and innovative programming.

The Muhlenberg Series is particularly proud to be able to present this year two of the greatest artists in the classical music world, Leon Fleisher and Jaime Laredo, together.
Fleisher has appeared in practically all the major music venues in the world as a pianist and a conductor. In recognition of his life-log achievements he received in 2007 the Kennedy Center Award. At 24 he won the Queen Elisabeth Competition. In 2000 he was inducted into the Classical Music Hall of Fame. Himself a student of Arthur Schnabel, Fleisher has become the teacher of great many accomplished pianists. Laredo has been appearing as violin soloist, conductor, recitalist and chamber musician for almost five decades. Giving his debut with the San Francisco Orchestra at 11, at 17 he won the Queen Elisabeth Competition. During his industrious career he has been associated with such legendary figures as Joseph Gingold, Pablo Casals, Ivan Galamian & George Szell. Both of these great artists have recorded extensively.

The 2011-2012 is the forty-seventh of the Musicians from Marlboro touring program, an extension of Vermont’s renowned Marlboro Music Festival (founded in 1951). The tours are noted for their overall excellence, innovative programming, and presenting to audiences the up-and-coming artists of the classical music world, playing side-by-side with the best of already established performers. Co-led by the eminent pianists Richard Goode & Mitsuko Uchida, “Marlboro” is now synonymous with musical excellence. The summer concerts, given at Marlboro College, are often sold well in advance of the summer season. The touring program represents the “best of the best” that Marlboro has to offer.
